Ubon Ratchathani Train Station
Rail service to Ubon Ratchathani varies from 8.5 hours to 12 hours. When traveling to Ubon by train you have your choice of 3 classes, 1st class is private compartment sleeper, 2nd class is wide reclining seats and air or fan sleeper, and 3rd class is open seating bench seats. The sleeper saves the cost of a hotel room for the night and is almost as comfortable.
In Bangkok the main train station is Hua Lamphong. It is convenient to get there now since the subway or underground is operating. Hua Lamphong is a terminal station for the subway.
You exit the underground to the train station. No fighting the famous Bangkok traffice. The subway runs 6am to 11pm. Of course you can always get there by taxi or tuk-tuk.
Purchasing tickets online is not yet available. You can go to Hua Lamphong and there is an Advance Booking Office to take care of you ahead of time. Also some travel agents are able to sell rail tickets.

The Ubon Train Station is in Warin Chamarap district of Ubon about 3km from Ubon city. You can get there by tuk-tuk, motorcycle taxi or #1 line mini bus.
When you arrive at in Ubon there will be drivers waiting with tuk-tuk, motorcycle taxi and private taxis. If you use these you must agree on the price before you leave. You can also catch the #1 line for 8 Baht, just make sure it is heading in the direction of Ubon City. It is slower but cheaper.

If you use rail service to Ubon overnight you can save the cost of a hotel room and it is quite comfortable. If you ride in a 3rd class seat during the day it's a good way to see some of the countryside, meet some locals and make some new friends. You can also practise your Thai.
Food vendors board the train in 3rd class and ride to the next stop. Usually sell some good barbeque chicken and sticky rice. Most trains have a dining car too so there is always food available.
